Race Management Training

Whenever there are sailboats racing, there are volunteers on the water running the races.

Race Management Courses provide Race Committee members with a common body of knowledge to run sailboat races. This is important so sailors have consistent and fair racing.

The Tasks of a Race Committee
  • starting races
  • recording the finishing order of boats

Starting Races

A bit of coordination is required among the people on the Race Committee to consistently have good and fair starts to races. All these individual and team skills are all easily learned.
  • Set a starting line that is perpendicular to the wind direction
  • Determine the course to be sailed
  • Maintain the timing of the starting sequence with a stopwatch
  • Signal boats in a starting sequence through sounds and flags

Finishing Races
This can be easy or exhilarating depending on how closely boats are finishing together.

There's a lot of pride that comes from being part of a good Race Committee, whether at a regatta or for the weekly Wednesday Night Racing. Everyone racing under a good Race Committee appreciates the time and dedication to making the racing consistent and fair.
