Welcome to Calgary's sailing community.

This is the first course to take when learning to sail a keelboat as an adult.

The Start Keelboat Sailing course develops fundamental keelboat sailing skills in moderate daytime conditions.

This 15 hour course is taught through:

  • A self-study pre-course workbook which can take up to 3 hours to complete. This is reviewed and marked during your online theory session.
  • 2 hour online theory session with your instructor
  • 13 hours over two days at the reservoir

Course Information:

  • Afloat sessions for this course are aboard the Club's SanJuan 21 keelboats.
  • This course is required to crew on the Club's co-op keelboats.
  • Student Standard for this Course - this course covers all Performance Objectives of the national standard except manoeuvring under power. Outboard motors can not be used on lesson sailboats on the Glenmore Reservoir.
  • Students achieving all Performance Objectives covered during this course will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Club (not the Start Keelboat Sailing Standard).
  • Instructor Standard (qualifications of instructors for this course).
  • Alberta Sailing Association and Sail Canada Course Levy applied during course registration.
