Pleasure Craft Operator Card
(This is a mandatory requirement to operate a motor on a pleasure craft by Transport Canada)

Who needs an Operator Card?

Everyone who operates a power-driven boat needs proof of competency — something that shows they understand the basic rules and how to safely operate a boat. The most common proof of competency is the Pleasure Craft Operator Card. You can get the card by taking a boating safety course in-person or online, and passing the test at the end of the course.

Prerequisites
None

Time:

4 hour course - in person
(2 hr Course Content break and 1 hr Exam)

Course objectives:

To improve the safety of all boaters and the boating environment.
To get your Pleasure Craft Operator Card as required by the regulation.
To learn about your responsibility.
To make your boating experience enjoyable for everyone.

The PCOC Course covers a full range of basic boating information such as:

minimum safety equipment requirements required on board your boat;
the Canadian Buoy system;
how to share waterways;
a review of all pertinent regulations;
and how to respond in an emergency situation.

Spring Clean Up and Club Opener (April 25, 2026)

Time to get the Club and boats and ready for the sailing season.

Club - everyone meet at the clubhouse. Coffee and snacks available for breakfast and pizza for lunch

GSC Dinghy Area - follow the lower pathway to the Club's dinghy area

Work to do includes:

Club - yard work (garbage, trimming, raking, pressure wash deck, etc.), cleaning (dusting, windows, kitchen etc.)
Set up Tent
GSC Dinghy Area - empty storage container (seacan) and sheds and get Club boats ready for the season
Pick up San Juan 21's and trailer to heritage park
- Step mast on the boats and set up for the season.

Please bring your work clothes (gloves, etc.) and dress for the weather. If you have hand tools that are suited to the tasks in your area please bring them.

Keelboat 3 - Keelboat Cruising

This third sailing education course expands your sailing knowledge through sailing in coastal tidal waters. This course is conducted on the Glenmore Sailing Club's Catalina 30 at the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club Marina. The Club is excited to have a partnership with this Club as we share many educational and membership objectives.

One course, two possible outcomes.

This course covers the Performance Objectives within the Basic Cruising Standard Depending on each student's ability to competently and consistently demonstrate these Performance Objectives determines which Standard a student achieves.

Basic Cruising Standard: Students with a consistent and comprehensive demonstration of course Performance Objectives will realize their Basic Cruising Standard. This is the likely outcome for individuals who have sailed previously (CANSail Dinghy or keelboat)

Basic Crew Standard: Students able to consistently assist a skipper will realize their Basic Crew Standard. This is the likely outcome for individuals who have limited or no previous sailing experience.

Course prerequisites:

Keelboat 2 (Keelboat Skipper).
The Basic Cruising Skills book is required reading.

Course Format:

Five hours of ashore theory split into two sessions in Calgary prior to going to the west coast. (dates to be set - plan for one to three weeks ahead of your course on the coast).
Three 8.5-hour days of sailing and motoring onboard "Summer Ice"
Two-hour written test onboard before the end of the last day onboard.

This course is held in all weather with moderate wind and sea conditions.
This is a day sailing program, not a live aboard program.
Students with a consistent and comprehensive demonstration of course Performance Objectives will realize their Basic Cruising Standard. Students able to consistently assist a skipper will realize their Basic Crew Standard. Students achieving a Crew or Cruising Standard will receive a Sail Canada logbook with the seal and instructor sign off on their course.
Students arrange their own transportation to/from Sydney North Saanich Yacht Club and accommodations on Vancouver Island.

Assistant Race Officer Clinic - Level 1 (May 03, 2026)

This one-day clinic will give you the fundamentals to be part of the race committee running sailboat races for a Wednesday evening or a weekend regatta.

Starts at 10am. Lunch will be ordered from Subway.

Mileage Builders help you practice your new cruising skills in coastal waters. Designed for graduates of our KB3 or any Sail Canada Basic Coastal program, this course is conducted on the Glenmore Sailing Club's Catalina 30 at the Sidney North Saanich Marina in Victoria, BC.

Create your own four-day liveaboard cruise and learn adventure!

Prior to the course, students set their learning goals and objectives using the performance objectives within the Basic and Intermediate Cruising standards. This course does not award a formal standard, but can be logged for proof of experience for future courses and chartering opportunities.

With more than 40 years of experience, he has competed in everything from dinghies to 12m yachts, racing round the buoys, long distance, and offshore. Mike has served on international juries at several World and Continental championships throughout North America including the 2015 Pan AM Games. He has many years of experience chairing protest committees for major local events including Swiftsure International Yacht Race, the Oregon Offshore Race and the Van Isle 360.

Come experience sailing with an evening of Boys, Boats and Beers.

Bring your sense of adventure as you'll be trimming the mainsail, working the jib and taking the tiller on one of the Club's keelboats.

After sailing... we all head to the Glenmore Sailing Club's deck for beer, a brat on a bun with all the toppings and stories about the evening's sailing while enjoying the sunset over the reservoir.

Must be 18+ years old to participate in this program.

Sails & Sips Co-ed Sailing (June 09, 2026)

Experience sailing.

This event is just what you need to get away and do something different, right here in the city...and we are combining the best of both worlds by creating our first co-ed event. This is a pilot event after receiving some feedback last year of creating a "date night".

Our skipper will meet you at the dock and have a sailboat ready for you to board. Hop on and enjoy the ride, or roll up your sleeves and be part of the crew. Trim the sails, take the tiller, or just pose for the best selfie of your year. Come on your own or make it a night out with friends.

Participants may register as a couple or a crew of three, making it easy to team up and enjoy a fun, social sail together!

After sailing, head to the sailing club to enjoy a bottle of wine or some beer and regale each other with stories about your sailing adventure.

Boys, Boats and Beers (June 23, 2026)

Come experience sailing with an evening of Boys, Boats and Beers.

Bring your sense of adventure as you'll be trimming the mainsail, working the jib and taking the tiller on one of the Club's keelboats.

After sailing... we all head to the Glenmore Sailing Club's deck for beer, a brat on a bun with all the toppings and stories about the evening's sailing while enjoying the sunset over the reservoir.

Must be 18+ years old to participate in this program.

Come experience sailing with an evening of Boys, Boats and Beers.

Bring your sense of adventure as you'll be trimming the mainsail, working the jib and taking the tiller on one of the Club's keelboats.

After sailing... we all head to the Glenmore Sailing Club's deck for beer, a brat on a bun with all the toppings and stories about the evening's sailing while enjoying the sunset over the reservoir.

Sleeping Arrangements

Summer Ice is a modest-sized vessel and does not have cabins. Consider our time aboard as you might living with family in a smaller RV or at a rustic lakeside cabin.
Summer Ice can accommodate up to four people in the following configurations
- Three individual students in separate bunks
- One individual student in a single bunk, one couple sharing a bunk
- Two couples, each sharing a bunk

What to bring:

Clothing: Synthetic clothing in layers... base layers and insulation layers. Windbreaker, fleece jackets, rain jacket, rain pants. Avoid cotton where possible.
Footwear: Closed toed shoes or flat soled rubber boots with non-marking soles.
Other Gear: backpack or duffle bag for your gear onboard; sunscreen / block; sunglasses with a safety string; lip balm stick; hat with clip or line to tie onto your PFD; water bottle; Buff or neck warmer. OPTIONAL items to bring: camera, watch; anti-nausea (Meclizine, Dramamine, etc) and/or allergy medication (Instructors can not provide any oral medications for students.)
Sailing gloves or rubber coated mesh back gloves: For the rubber / mesh gloves consider cutting the fingertips off of the thumb, index and middle fingers leaving your most distal 1.5 finger segments exposed. This protects your hands and still allows for finer work with shackles, chart plotter, etc.
Sleeping bag, pillow case, and optional pillow. Clothing for four days aboard
All belongings must be packed in a collapsible duffle bag. There is not sufficient space for suitcases aboard.

40-Love is a six-piece band that was formed under social distancing rules in the clubhouse at the Calgary Tennis Club during Covid times. Featuring two players that have played on numerous recordings, and another who has played with symphonies as well as toured with major artists, 40-Love presents a good variety of predominantly classic rock tunes, with a hint of country and blues. Playing recognizable, danceable, and enjoyable music, 40-Love puts an emphasis on fun in their musical selection and performance.
